Who We Are

Our Story

Action on Disability (AoD), established in 1979, is a pioneering organisation based in West London. We are driven by a simple yet powerful philosophy: disabled people should have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Our journey began with a group of disabled people who shared a vision of a society free from barriers and discrimination.

Our Mission

At AoD, our mission is to champion the rights, needs, and ambitions of disabled people. We strive to create an inclusive environment where everyone can enjoy independence, choice, and control over their lives. Our approach is not just about providing services; it’s about empowering individuals to navigate their own paths.

Our Services

We offer a comprehensive range of services designed to support disabled people in various aspects of their lives:

Employment Services

Assisting individuals in finding and retaining meaningful employment.

Youth Services

Providing young disabled people with opportunities for personal development and social engagement.

Welfare Benefits Service

Offering support and advice on accessing and managing welfare benefits.

Direct Payments Support Service

Helping individuals manage their Direct Payments for social care services.

Our Place Project

Creating a community space and resource hub for disabled people.

Peer Support Groups

Facilitating groups for socializing, sharing knowledge, and mutual support.

Training

Providing Disability Equality Training, Deaf Awareness, and British Sign Language courses.

Our Approach

Our work is underpinned by the Social Model of Disability, which recognises that people are disabled by societal barriers, not by their impairments. We advocate for the removal of these barriers, whether they are physical, attitudinal, or systemic.

Our Team

AoD is led by a dedicated team of professionals, many of whom are disabled themselves. This unique perspective ensures that our services are not only empathetic but also highly effective. Our team includes skilled social workers, experienced employment advisors, passionate youth workers, and knowledgeable benefits advisors, all committed to making a difference.

Our Impact

Over the years, we have made significant strides in empowering disabled people. From influencing policy changes to providing individual support, our impact is both wide-reaching and deeply personal. We measure our success not just in numbers, but in the real-life stories of the people we support.

Join Us

We invite you to join us in our mission. Whether you’re seeking support, looking to volunteer, or interested in partnering with us, your involvement can make a real difference. Together, we can work towards a world where disability is no longer a barrier to opportunity and inclusion.
